The Secrets of Home Carpet Cleaning

It's not a secret anymore. UCM Carpet Cleaning Wellesley wants you to take good care of your carpets.

We've put together some tips to help you do just that. That's right. Carpet cleaners want to help you clean your own carpets. The truth is that people will always need professional carpet cleaning, but by taking proper care of your carpets in between cleanings, you may need it a little less often.

Just be aware that if you damage the protective stain resistant coating on your carpet, you may void the warranty. If you are not sure that you can clean your carpet safely, feel free to call UCM Carpet Cleaning Wellesley, and we can take care of it for you.

Barefoot Living

Have you ever noticed dirt and tiny pebbles caught in the tread of your shoes? When you walk across the living room, this dirt gets transferred from your shoes to your carpet. You can minimize the damage caused by dirt by following these simple steps:

  • Invest in doormats

Place mats at every entrance, and make sure that people use them each and every time they enter your home before walking on the carpet. This will take away some of the dirt off the bottom of their shoes before it can get on your carpet.

  • Make barefoot the rule

Do you want to eliminate even more dirt? Make sure everyone takes off their shoes at the door. Keep a pair of shoes for house wear only or slippers for everyone in your family, and your carpets will stay cleaner.

  • Vacuum up the surface dirt

Your vacuum cleaner is your secret weapon for removing the surface dirt that can be abrasive to your carpet. Make sure you vacuum on a regular basis, at least once a week. Once over is generally not enough -; for light traffic areas, go over it 2 or 3 times - for entryways, you may need to go over each spot with as many as 12 passes to get up all the surface dirt. We recommend a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar, good suction, and a HEPA filter system.

Stop Stains Fast

When you spill anything on your carpet, time is ticking against you to get the spill up before it stains. Here are some basic instructions you should follow to get the best results, whether you've spilled red wine or something else on the carpet.

  1. If there are solids, remove them off the top of the carpet's pile, without working them further into the carpet. A spoon or other scooping utensil may be helpful.
  2. Blot, don't rub. Take a clean white cloth or absorbent, white paper towel, and gently blot up the spill, always working from the outside towards the center. This will keep the area affected by the spill from spreading. Rubbing can push the stain downwards so that even our professionals might have difficulty getting it out! Remove as much of the liquid as possible, switching to a clean cloth as necessary.
  3. If you can see discoloration in the area, you may want to try to clean it. Just note:
    • Commercial stain removers may be too harsh, especially for natural fibers.
    • If you address just a spot, the clean spot may show up starkly against the background of the rest of the carpet. If this happens to you, a full carpet cleaning may be in order.
    • Pretest what you want to use in an unseen area, especially for darker carpets. You don't want to bleach them!
